Consumers of Internet porn (by which we mean most people) take note: .XXX, the much-talked-about new domain extension reserved for websites with adult content, is officially here. More than 100,000 sites featuring one of the new addresses went live today at 11:00 AM EST.

Since they were first announced earlier this year, the .XXX domains have been a source of controversy, with advocates arguing they'll make browsing more safe and opponents fearing an eventual mandatory exile. In a statement, ICM Registry, the group responsible for distributing the domains, said .XXX was about responsibility.

"The adult entertainment industry has, and always will, account for a large amount of [Web] content and while it is enjoyed by some, it is not suitable, or of interest, to all Internet users. Regardless of your views on adult content, it's here to stay, so let's be adult about it."

Expect to see .XXX wherever you get your jollies online.
