A Bethesda forum user known as Arisu has created a new mod for Skyrim that will supposedly increase frame rates and improve performance. Response on the message boards, as well as on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, seems positive.

The Skyrim Acceleration Layer "works mostly by rewriting some x87 FPU code and inlining a whole ton of useless getter functions along the critical paths" according to Arisu, "because the developers at Bethesda, for some reason, compiled the game without using any of the optimization flags for release builds."

That's a bit over our heads, but if you've got an inkling what he's talking about, you can download it here (you'll need the Skyrim Script Extender from here).

If the solution really is as obvious as he claims, we have to wonder if Bethesda will repeat their actions regarding a patch that enabled the game to utilize more RAM, which we reported on last week—i.e., disable this mod and then release an official patch that does the same thing in a month's time. We hope now, but what do you think? Let us know in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter.
