It will be a full year before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will appear in theaters, but Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson have given us the first look at the anticipated film. The trailer, which was unveiled by Ian McKellen via his Twitter account (@ianmckellen118) last night, comes ten years to the day after the first Lord of the Rings movie was released.
After a long hiatus, Jackson finally takes us back to Middle Earth for the prequel, where we see Gandalf (McKellen) challenging Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) to an adventure to reclaim the Dwarf kingdom from the dragon Smaug. As the trailer comes to a close, we also catch a foreboding glimpse of Bilbo encountering Gollum (Andy Serkis) in a cave, with Gollum hovering over him and while creepily purring, “Bagginses, what is the Bagginess? ...precious!”
If Gollum's return isn't enough to squelch your Lord of the Rings nostalgia, Cate Blanchett will be returning as Gardriel, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, and even Elijah Wood will briefly reprise his role as Frodo.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will premiere in December 2012, while the prequel's second installment, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again" will see a 2013 release.
