Sony's new handheld had a decent first week in Japan.

The numbers are in from the Playstation Vita's big debut in Japan and it looks like the platform had a solid first week, sales-wise. According to Famitsu, 321,407 Vitas were sold during the platform's "launch week": For the record, the Vita's "launch week" was actually a two-day period, December 17th and 18th.

That number falls just short of the Nintendo 3DS, which sold approximately 371,000 consoles at launch in Japan. Still, getting 300,000+ new consoles out there is no slouch and, more importantly, the console's sales are a dramatic improvement over the launch of Sony's last mobile console, the PSP, which only sold 166,704 units during its opening week in 2004.
