The average consumer’s high-speed Internet connection tops out at around 50 Mbps, if you’re lucky and willing to spend as much as you do on rent… which makes Caltech’s achievement all the more incredible: researchers from the university just set an Internet speed record with a combined rate of 186 Gbps, the equivalent of transferring 100,000 Blu-Ray disks per day.

The setup involved a 100 Gbps network sending a 98 Gbps in one direction and 88 Gbps in another, demolishing the record of 119 Gbps set two years ago.
