The official Legend of Zelda timeline has been a subject of much debate for years, and Nintendo's always remained strategically silent on the subject—until two days ago, when they released the Hyrule Historia compendium, which contains the official timeline in all its controversial glory.
As long as you don't mind clicking a link to a site called "Glitter Berri," you can check out a rough translation of the timeline and find out what's really been going on in Hyrule all these years. One point of debate iss the split that occurs after Ocarina of Time—in one timeline, Link defeats Ganon, and Majora's Mask and Wind Waker follow, but in the other, Ganon Wins, which leads to A Link to the Past.
The most popular explanation is that every time Ocarina of Time Link goes back in time to change things as a child a new timeline is created, but hey, we're not really qualified to determine these things.
