D.C.'s Homicide Numbers Hit 50-Year Low

"Murder capital" no more.

None

As 2011 comes to a close, the nation's capital has something to be proud of-murders will likely be the lowest in five decades. As of Wednesday, there were 108 registered murders in D.C. this year, which is an 18 percent dip from the 132 last year and the fewest since 1963 when there were just 95 killings.

The number of reported murders in D.C. have dropped dramatically since 1991, when the nation's capital earned the distinction of the "murder capital' after 479 people were killed. It should be noted that murders have dropped nationwide, but D.C. has definitely made progress over the past two decades.
