Valve has released information to the public regarding a recent breach of security with their Steam service. According to the message sent out by Valve CEO Gabe Newell last night, information on the service’s database was accessed by an intruder(s) in the system. This information included user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.
While it is alarming that the database was breached, it is important to note that there has been absolutely zero evidence that any of Valve’s stored information had been decrypted. Unlike other services <cough, Sony, cough>, Valve keeps all valuable customer information encrypted. Users are still advised to keep a close eye on their registered credit card accounts just to be safe though as Valve is still investigating the event(s).
