The Muppets go way back. Jim Henson's fertile imagination gave birth to the colorful puppet crew in 1954, so it's safe to assume that all of us, to some degree, grew up with them in the TV series Sam And Friends (1955-1961) and The Muppet Show (1976-1981), as well as flicks like 1979's The Muppet Movie, 1981's The Great Muppet Caper, and 1984's The Muppets Take Manhattan. As awesome as these child-friendly embodiments of adult life were, the Muppets, like many phenomenons from our youth, faded into the pop culture periphery.

Thankfully, Jason Segel wasn't having that. Looking to resurrect the gang, the puppet-loving entertainer teamed with Nicholas Stoller and wrote The Muppets, which releases today and is their first big-screen feature since 1999's Muppets From Space. We all owe Segel, who stars in the film with Amy Adams, and even introduced a new Muppet, Walter, a debt of grattitude. We start repaying him with a countdown of the most swagger-ific characters in the crew: The 15 Coolest Muppets.
