Previously scheduled for a June 29, 2012 release, Star Trek 2 gets an official new release date! Paramount Pictures announced that J.J. Abramsmuch anticipated sci-fi film is set to open nationwide on May 17, 2013. Paramount has turned up the juice for this project after Sony Pictures pushed back the release date for Roland Emmerich's Singularity from that day to November 1, 2013.

Deadline reports confirmation that the Super 8 helmer has begun negotiations with Bencio Del Toro to play a villain in the next space adventure. The pieces are slowly beginning to fall into place now that Abrams has finally committed to directing the Star Trek sequel. As of now, the movie still doesn't have a title, but at least now it's up to Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof (who tweeed the news) to make the thing.

Last, but certainly not least on the big news tip, is that Abrams will be making his first foray into 3D filmmaking. Trekkie stans should start salivating right now, as this means the U.S.S. Enterprise will be warping right into your face.
