Maurizio Cattelan, that lovably obnoxious art prankster from Italy has an insanely great retrospective at the Guggenheim, opening today. All his bratty best are hanging here, from his meteor toppled pope (La Nona Ora 1999) to his carrara marble middle finger (L.O.V.E. 2010.) That work perfectly sums up Cattelan, whose career is one big funny "FUCK YOU" to religion, the government, and the art world itself. Even the mind-blowing mounting of this show continues that tradition. Everything is suspended from wire and scaffolding down the center rotunda of the Goog, looking like either the world’s most expensive children’s mobile, or as Cattelan himself put it, “sausages hanging in a shop window.” You would be a fool to miss this show.
