New NFC Chips Can Help You Avoid Counterfeits

Canal Street economy set to suffer.

None

French company Inside Secure, probably hoping to score some substantial business from all of the luxury goods brands in France, has just announced a counterfeit-killer, the Vault150.

An NFC-based chip, the Vault150 will be embedded into products for authentication purposes by shoppers with NFC-enabled smartphones. They can be integrated into anything, from handbags to wine bottles, since they require no power, instead collecting RF energy from the NFC reader via antenna options that also sense voltage, frequency, and temperature changes.

The chips can also notify shoppers of price, and therefore savings, from a potential purchase. So, next time some dude on Canal Street rolls up on you with Rollies for sale for a couple hundred bucks, you’ll know for certain whether or not they’re actually stolen.
