A Senate vote yesterday killed a Republican-led bill seeking to overturn the net neutrality rules put in place by the FCC last year.
The current rules prevent ISPs from blocking access to certain sites and apps and from having tiered pricing connection speeds, measures which some see as maintaining a freer web in terms of cost and access. However, the Republicans view the FCC rules as evidence of government over-regulation.
The risk of having no regulation is the empowering of the ISPs. Companies such as Verizon and AT&T could very well restrict access and charge the consumer—or charge content providers such as Google. Or both.
