How Many Non-Apple Tablets Were Sold In 2011?

Hint: Not many.

None

In one of Steve Jobs's last keynotes, he made a prediction that 2011 would be "the year of the iPad 2," despite the coming onslaught of tablet devices from a long list of competitors. Now that the year is almost over, and tablets have been launched by seemingly every company under the sun, how accurate was Mr. Jobs's prediction? According to new research by NPD, pretty much dead accurate.

A study by the firm looking at the first 10 months of 2011 showed that just 1.2 million tablets were sold by companies not based in Cupertino, California. For comparison, Apple sold 11.1 million iPads in the fourth quarter of this year alone.

Those 1.2 million tablets were split among big names, including Samsung, HP, Motorola, Acer, Asus, HTC, Dell and others. HP had the biggest slice of a tiny pie with 17 percent of non-Apple tablets, but they had to implement a $99 firesale of the TouchPad to claim that title. Samsung was a close second with 16 percent.

Jeff Bezos's resolution for 2012? Breaking open this market with the Kindle Fire.
