It turns out that Paramount Pictures is actually serious about creating a sequel to 1986's action film Top Gun. Looking to add a bit of prestige to their project, the studio is in negotiations with Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to tackle the screenplay. While originally director Tony Scott confirmed the existence of the sequel last year, he hasn't been officially announced to direct, nor has it been confirmed whether or not Tom Cruise will have any role in the new, yet-to-be penned story.
Last we heard, the plot will have a focus on the pilots who fly drones and other vehicles via high-tech equipment. There's not as much danger zone involved when the plane doesn't have an actual pilot to get shot down, but now it'll be Miller and Stentz's job to find the drama. Scribe Christopher McQuarrie has reportedly came up with some story ideas, which should at least give them a firm basis from which to start.
But with so many chefs in the kitchen (Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original, is on board), will Top Gun 2 ever jump off the deck and head into the production zone?
