Toshiba Bests Apple's 'Retina Display' With New LCD

A new standard.

None

Since it debuted with the iPhone 4 in June of 2010, no one in the industry has been able to beat Apple's super hi-res "retina display," which packs 326 pixels per inch onto the devices screen. Samsung came close with the Galaxy Nexus's HD Super AMOLED display, but was just shy with 316 ppi. Now, though, a team at Toshiba has not just caught up, but will blow Apple's record out of the water with a new LCD that boasts a whopping 498 pixels per inch.

The display is 6.1 inches and will be targeted at tablet devices. It's resolution is 2,560×1,600 pixels, and it's got a 1,000:1 contrast ratio for very deep blacks. Toshiba will officially unveil the new display at the Flat Panel Display show in Yokohama next week.
