If there were any lingering doubts about the demand for Apple's latest iPhone, they can be put to rest. The iPhone 4S is the fastest selling phone in history, with over four million units sold in its first three days.

“iPhone 4S is off to a great start with more than four million sold in its first weekend—the most ever for a phone and more than double the iPhone 4 launch during its first three days,” said Phill Schiller, the company's marketing chief in a statement.

The iPhone 4S is the first iPhone to launch on more than one carrier, and is currently available from AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. The iPhone 4, which launched as an AT&T exclusive, sold only 1.7 million units in its first weekend.

The fastest selling consumer electronics device in history is the Kinect for Xbox, which sold 10 million units in about four months. At its current rate, assuming it can keep the phone in stores, Apple should have no problem topping that record sooner rather than later.
