After more than a decade Whitney Houston could finally return to the big screen, while American Idol winner Jordin Sparks might embark on another star-making turn in front of the big screen. The two singers, along with actor Mike Epps, are in negotiations to star in Sparkle, Sony Pictures remake of the 1976 music-themed drama, which is very loosely based on the story of the Supremes.
Mara Brock Akil, who created and executive produces BET's hit comedy The Game, penned the script while husband Salim Akil is directing. The original Sparkle centers on the Williams sisters, three siblings who go from their Harlem church choir to become a successful girl group. Their sudden rise to fame unravels their personal lives. Sparks will play the title character, Sparkle, while Houston will play her not-so encouraging mother. Epps will portray Satin, a stand-up comedian who marries one of the sisters, and gets her hooked on drugs.
Whitney knows a thing or two about getting hooked, but hopefully this is a fresh start for the legendary singer. Sparkle will mark the acting debut for Jordin Sparks, who won the sixth season of American Idol, and had top singles such as "No Air."
