We imagine the conversation that took place when Lorne Michaels first heard the pitch for "MacGruber" went a little something like this:
Will Forte: The sketch is a spoof of MacGyver, except instead of solving problems, he blows up every time!
Lorne Michaels: A parody of MacGyver? How the hell have we not done that before?!
An idea funny enough you almost forget it came from a cast member in the last four years (admit it, the show has taken a tip in recent times), "MacGruber" follows a simple format: MacGruber is locked in a room with a bomb that is seconds away from blowing up, he tries to diffuse it, but he fails and everyone dies. Yep, that's it. See, the brilliant thing about this sketch isn't how funny it is, it's the fact that the same thing happens every single time, and it's still hilarious. Add in MacGruber's son, played by Shia LaBeouf (yeah, we aren't fans either, but he does hold his own here), and it's a win-win.
