When you have a film that stars such an impressive cast as does The Gangster Squad, you're supposed to believe that every award is to come your way. Warner Bros. believes this to be true as director Ruben Fleischer's "based on a true story" crime drama ensemble is scheduled for an October 2012 release.
According to Deadline, the specific date is October 19, and the period piece has already begun filming. The film is based on Tales From The Gangster Squad, a seven-part series by reporter Paul Lieberman that was published in the Los Angeles Times in 2008. Sean Penn stars in the film as Brooklyn-born crime boss Mickey Cohen, who had local politicians and the LAPD dancing to his tune in the 1940s. Josh Brolin and Ryan Goslin are John O'Mara and Jerry Wooters, respectively, two outsider LAPD sergeants who are tasked with the duty of taking the mob kingpin down.
Micheal Pena, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone, Mireille Enos, Giovanni Ribisi, and Holt McCallany round out this all-star cast.
