There are more than just several hundred shooters out there for you to choose from. But why is Battlefield 3 on so many people’s radars this year? It’s not just DICE’s stunning history with the franchise. Battlefield 1942 was indeed a phenomenal game, no arguments there. The excitement brewing over Battlefield 3 is attributed to even more than just the mind blowing graphics thanks to the new Frostbite 2 engine. What it all boils down to is the thrill of the experience in playing (or even just watching) groups of armies on either side of the both literal and metaphorical trenches scramble to survive and conquer.
We got to spend hands-on time with the game to bring you thoughts of what makes this upcoming FPS so enticing.

Getting Into The Thick Of Battle

Sure, many first-person shooters entail quite a bit of fast-paced action. There’s no denying the intensity of a full-scale, multiplayer, team on team experience. But DICE has gone through a painstaking process of researching the actual experiences of warfare, making sure to include small details like dirty, roughed up guns and more important details like realistic recoil when firing weapons.
Yes, plenty of games do include unstable firing to replicate the kickback you feel when firing real weaponry, but Battlefield 3 developers didn’t put the training wheels on this one. You’re going to be experiencing realism at its most unforgiving. Warfare isn’t as easy as “ready, aim, fire.” There are a lot of factors that could both potentially help and impede your progress, and DICE put measures into place to ensure that gamers get the most realistic of experiences.

Impressive Environmental Destruction

One of the more exciting aspects of your impending combat experience in Battlefield 3 is the ability to shoot through buildings and watch as your massively powerful weaponry cuts through even the thickest of cement walls. Unfortunately, our short portion of the single player experience didn’t get to see much of this. We mainly wandered in the dark, reacting to the Iranian enemies as their threats became clear to us. Running down a hill and setting up our illumination shot set up the path for us, but enemies were shooting from various vantage points both behind destructable cover and out in the open.

Keeping Up The Pace

We zipped through the field, picking up new weapons to try out; some with precise scopes, others with more stable balance and less of that nasty kickback. It was an intense, and sometimes confusing experience as you were being bombarded by bullets and grenades, and your teammates were insistently pushing forward as you try to get a handle on the new rifle you just picked up. Enemies and teammates alike will drop to their knees right in front of you, some even while on fire.
This attack is gritty, and fast-paced without regard to the player’s needs, but in the best way possible. Rather than feeling like a game made for us, Battlefield 3 felt like an experience was cultivated that we are meant to adapt to it. Battlefield 3 has something it wants to show you, whether you can keep up with its pace or not. You can figure out what that is when it releases on October 25.
