The blue-eyed soul singer has a long history. Stepping now into the limelight is Allen Stone, a floppy-haired dude with big glasses who hails from Chewelah, Wash. He looks a little like Peter Fonda, sings a lot like Maxwell. Stone's playful awkwardwardness recalls the posturing of Mayer Hawthorne, another white guy with pipes and a fondness for 45s. But where Hawthorne deals in pastiches (excellent pastiche, to be sure), Stone wants his music to sound like his own, even as he engages with a historically black genre.
Come out to S.O.B.'s on Wednesday, September 28, to see what we mean.
