In a very unsurprising move, Apple will reportedly announce the discontinuation of both its iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle models at its October 4th press conference, therein finally retiring the vaunted click-wheel.

The ubiquity of the iPhone and iPad notwithstanding, both iPod iterations have already been rendered redundant by other iPod models, with the Nano’s shrinking size comparable to that of the Shuffle and increasing flash drive standards soon putting the Touch within striking distance of the Classic’s storage capabilities.

Though rest assured that in about 15 years, the devices will have earned its retro-cool stripes and might be of use then—granted your computer is also archaic enough to support them.
