"127 Hours" Fanboy Takes Trip to Utah, Terrible Things Happen

Surprise!

None

Here’s an example of when being a fanboy goes horribly wrong.

After watching Danny Boyle’s127 Hours, 64 year-old Amos Wayne Richards decided that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Aron Ralston. Richards was inspired by Ralston’s actions, but didn’t seem to learn much from his mistakes.

After being gassed up by James Franco’s portrayal of Ralston, Richards made his way to Utah’s Canyonlands to follow in his footsteps earlier this month. This led to Richards taking a ten-foot dive remarkably close to where Ralston fell and was forced to amputate his own arm in order to save himself. Fortunately, Park Rangers took note of Richard's absence from his campsite and began a search for him the following day. When they saw his car near the Little Blue John trailhead, they knew they had found him.

Richards suffered a broken leg and dislocated shoulder as a result of the fall. He’s currently recovering in his native North Carolina, and he still has his leg. Hopefully, he’s learned a valuable lesson. We’d like to think that Ralston is somewhere shaking his head, singing T.I.’s “Be Better Than Me.”
