30 Minutes or Less director Ruben Fleischer has been hot for... well, a minute. His feature directorial debut, 2009's Zombieland, showcased the kind of unique comic vision that makes the film industry sit up and take notice. Not only did Flesicher work wonders with a modest budget, but his eye for talent was dead-on, casting Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone in leading roles right before they both went stratospheric.

In 30 Minutes, Fleischer is once again teamed with Academy Award nominee Eisenberg in a story that promises to share Zombieland's darkly comic flair. Eisenberg plays a pizza delivery guy whose expediency is put to the test when some criminals (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) strap a bomb to his chest and force him to rob a bank before he's blown to bits. Fleischer just seems to get off-kilter comedy. Maybe it's the time he spent as assistant to Miguel Arteta (Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl), or maybe it comes from the hours spent as a writer and producer on the Rob Dyrdek/Johnny Knoxville collabos Rob & Big and Fantasy Factory. He also directed two episodes of "Between Two Ferns" with Zach Galifianakis... just sayin'.

Like any great director, however, Fleischer chooses projects that will test him. Up next he has the Noir period piece The Gangster Squad, and since working with Oscar types ain't no thing, this time it's Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin leading a top-notch cast. Maybe after that one, Ruben will have a little gold man of his own.

30 Minutes or Less opens this Friday, August 12 in theaters near you.
