Apparently this week is Weird '80s week across the nation’s movie night clubs, because The Ice Pirates has to be one of the most god-awful, who-the-hell-let-this-get made, laugh-out-loud hilarious films involving robots and pirates ever made. The concept is not far off from a lot of sci-fi plots: In the future, water is the most precious commodity to be found, and there are plenty of rogue bandits with junked-up spaceships looking to swipe ice blocks from cargo vessels. There’s also vomiting robots, creepy worms known as “space herpes” (I am not joking here), a whole lot of genital mutilation innuendos and a ridiculously long sex scene involving the hero, Robert Urich (whose other claim to fame in the 80s was playing the sensitive-intelligent private eye from Boston in TV’s Spenser: For Hire series). Also starring Angelica Huston and Ron Perlman.
