Now that Asteroidshas been launched into cinematic outerspace, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura isn't wasting any time in getting another bad idea off the ground. The Hollywood Reporter says that the bankroll behind Transformers and G.I. Joe is pairing up with Odd Lot Entertainment to bring another '80s video game staple, Space Invaders, to a theater near you.

If you were born after 1991, then you may have no recollection of the pixelated shooter, which represented a crude space battle. The title is the top arcade game of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, and that is brand equity that you can only dream of (especially if you're James Cameron).

Odd Lot Entertainment's Gigi Pritzker and Bonaventura have teamed up to option the rights, develop the project, and are now on the hunt for a writer to come up with a story. Since Futurama already beat them to the punch with an episode based on the game, we have an idea for you: Stop. Do not pass go. Abort mission. There's already a slew of movies based on video games that are in various stage of production; from the aforementioned Asteroids to one based on Angry Birds. SMH status indeed.
