Scouring source code is bound to yield a hidden nugget or two like, say, a download link for streaming-only media. The code for Facebook’s new Skype-assisted video chatting may have revealed an entirely new feature: a little something called “Vibes.”
Software engineer Jeff Rose made the discovery, finding a plugin named “peep” in reference to the video chatting and another called “vibes” returning the command “MusicDownloadDialog.”
A music service from Facebook has long been rumored and would represent a natural progression for the network as it increases its presence as a social media for artists. Word of a partnership between the company and popular music streaming service Spotify got out last month. Whether or not a cloud is involved is the big question.
