Live Show Alert: Avant Jazz with Matthew Shipp Trio in Denver Friday (7/15)

This pianist worked with El-P on the classic High Water record.

In the world of modern jazz piano, Matthew Shipp’s name sits right up near the top, if not directly on top. As a player, Shipp has appeared on countless records with the regular cast of the Blue Series Continuum—David S. Ware and William Parker—along with various electronic producers like DJ Spooky and El-P.

On 2004’s High Water, Shipp helped El-P create an album of pure jazz that was later manipulated and filtered by the Brooklyn beatmaker. And he’s already released three albums this year, including one live set from Moscow. There’s nothing quite like seeing him live, however, as he brings his unique rhythmic attack to the piano in a way that reinterprets the dissonant banging first explored by Thelonious Monk.
