Rumor Confirmed: EA Purchases PopCap

Is this the end of PopCap games on Steam?

None

A few weeks ago, we helped circulate rumors that EA would be purchasing PopCap for an unbelievable sum of $1 billion.  Today we have confirmation that EA is indeed acquiring the casual gaming giant, but the price tag has fell a bit to a cool $750 million ($650 million cash, $100 million in stocks, plus chance for incentives).  PopCap CEO David Roberts says, "We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games. By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."

On the other side, EA CEO John Riccitello commented stating, "EA and PopCap are a compelling combination.  PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business."

We’re just nervous that following this transaction we’re going to see announcements that Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled have been removed from Steam because of EA's new digital service, Origin.  It’s a bold move for both companies and we’ll have to wait and see what this means to gamers.  [via Joystiq]
