Almost 25 years ago, this fantasy film spoof brought its strange sense of humor, witty dialogue, and all-star cast to the American consciousness, and the word “inconceivable”—spoken with a lisp, of course—was emblazoned into the minds of viewers young and old. A hilarious take on the maidens-and-dragons genre, Rob Reiner’s script starts off with a sick boy (Fred Savage) whose grandfather (the late Peter Falk) stops by to read him a story called “The Princess Bride.” As the story unfolds, a slew of fascinating characters are revealed: a giant (Andre the Giant); a miracle worker (Billy Crystal); an evil, six-fingered count (Christopher Guest); a dreamy prince (Cary Elwes); a damsel in distress (Robin Wright). There’s enough swordplay and crazy creatures to satisfy the D&D crowd, but the laughs are decidedly adult.—Finn Cohen
