The next four years are going to be busy one for the Internet. According to a report released by Cisco, the amount of Internet traffic is set to quadruple by the year 2015.

According to Cisco's annual Visual Networking Index Forecast report there's going to be a massive uptick in the amount of data being transferred across the web over the next few years. How major? 966-exabytes-per-year major. For comparison purposes: Total Internet traffic in 2010 was around 242.4 exabytes. Cisco is predicting that worldwide Internet usage will hit 245 terabytes per second, or the equivalent of 62,500 DVDs.

What's the cause of immense increase? Population growth along with the dissemination of technology into the hands of those who didn't previously have access to any, as well as the increase in the number of Internet-connected devices.Cisco says by 2015, almost 3 billion people will be surfing the Net. Also, video is set to take off in a major way over the next few years, with Cisco predicting there will be 1 million minutes of video being transferred across the Net every second.
