Now that Quentin Tarantino has his Django finally unchained, Idris Elba, who was also up for the role, has officially joined the cast of Pacific Rim

Guillermo Del Toro has locked in the actor, best known as Stringer Bell on The Wire and also recently seen in Thor, to play a character named Sensi. He joins Son of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam and Horrible Bosses Charlie Day as human soldiers who pilot giant robots to battle aliens who invade the Earth on both sides of the Pacific. Elba's role was originally developed as a vehicle for Tom Cruise, who has already settled on starring in Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion.

Hollywood is quickly taking notice of the British thespian's talents. Currently, Elba is shooting Prometheus with Ridley Scott directing, and then he'll move to Pacific Rim.
