The Fujitsu K supercomputer was announced as the fastest in the world today at the 26th Annual International Supercomputing Conference. Capable of making 8.2 quadrillion calculations per seconds—or 8.2 petaflops—the machine is three times as powerful as the runner-up, China’s Tianhe-1A.
Other mind-numbing stats posted by the “K”: it consumes enough electricity to power 10,000 homes for a full year, its performance is the equivalent of combining one million desktops, and it’s comprised of 672 cabinets and 68,544 CPUs. Fittingly, it’s been dubbed the “Earth Simulator.”
