As the Summer 2011 movie season gets underway, the common perception is that’s it’s the season of the superhero; coming off of Thor’s recent creative and financial triumphs, comic book heads can now look forward to X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, and Captain America: The First Avenger. And we’re right there with them, because, frankly, the summer’s other major trend gives us the worst kind of déjà vu: the always dreaded “movie sequel.”
We’re not talking about Random Hit Movie Follow-Up Part 7, though; for this discussion’s purposes, let’s focus on second films, the ones that directly proceed box office successes and, as a result, bring with them the most speculation. Next week alone will see the release of two such sequels, The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2, and by the end of August we’ll have seen firsthand whether Cars 2 squandered the first one’s widespread kiddie appeal.
Will this summer’s cinematic round two’s prove our skepticism wrong, or have us feeling ourselves some more (no hand lotion)? The jury is out, but let’s hope that those flicks fare better than the garbage on our list of The 50 Worst Movie Sequels Of All Time.

Even though this list is full of crappy sequels that deserve to be burned, I must disagree with you on Clerks 2 and Tron: Legacy. Maybe they weren't as GREAT as the first, but cmon, they weren't bad.

First, all respect for recognizing The Hills Have Eyes as the great remake that it is. However... I may be a tin foil hat wearing, in the corner muttering to himself, idiot asshat, but Aliens is definitely one of the worst sequals of all time. Everything that was great about Alien, the tension, the pacing, the minimalist sets, the feeling of isolation, dread, and claustorophobia - no where to run, nowhere to hide, and no one to save you on the ship- was completely destroyed by James Cameron in Aliens. Cameron took one the the greatest sci-fi/horror films of all times and shit out a loud, bombastic war movie. Laughable dialouge? Check. Poorly written characters? Check. Annoying child actor? Check. Re-hashed bad guy? Check. Massive ego? Not in check. So, yeah, Aliens blows. Also, Titanic II. Netflix it.

Wall Street 2 could have and should have been better, but it was by no means a bad movie, nor deserves a "worst sequel" title.

i realize tron legacy isnt going to win tthe oscar for best script but if you look at the original tron without your rose tinted nostalgia glasses, it wasnt that great a movie. and looking at its sequel against the original i would say its a decent movie. but thats just my opinion.

Matrix: Reloaded the 4th worst sequel? Haha...I think not. You're nuts.
JD May 26th, 2011 at 05:33 PM
You're right - it should be #1.

Yes, that was a painful 50 clicks, but every one of these I have seen, the dude is SPOT ON about. I'm thinking he knows what he's talking about. So I'll gladly pass on Wall St and Tron... I'm sure they aren't worth the time. And I'm prepared to be disappointed by Hangover 2 now :( Honestly people, Matrix 2 is about as bad as movies get. You can't fall any further from the original Matrix to one of the sequels. If you liked the sequels, you deserve a starring role in Idiocracy and a date with Maury Pauvich.
