As the Summer 2011 movie season gets underway, the common perception is that’s it’s the season of the superhero; coming off of Thor’s recent creative and financial triumphs, comic book heads can now look forward to X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, and Captain America: The First Avenger. And we’re right there with them, because, frankly, the summer’s other major trend gives us the worst kind of déjà vu: the always dreaded “movie sequel.”
We’re not talking about Random Hit Movie Follow-Up Part 7, though; for this discussion’s purposes, let’s focus on second films, the ones that directly proceed box office successes and, as a result, bring with them the most speculation. Next week alone will see the release of two such sequels, The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2, and by the end of August we’ll have seen firsthand whether Cars 2 squandered the first one’s widespread kiddie appeal.
Will this summer’s cinematic round two’s prove our skepticism wrong, or have us feeling ourselves some more (no hand lotion)? The jury is out, but let’s hope that those flicks fare better than the garbage on our list of The 50 Worst Movie Sequels Of All Time.
