With the apparent rapture coming this weekend, what better time to investigate the growing feud between Stephen Hawking and born-again sitcom star Kirk Cameron. Because, of course.
Speaking with the Guardian over the weekend, Hawking revealed that he doesn't believe in an afterlife. "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail," said Hawking. "There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."
That made Cameron, the former Growing Pains star who now stars in things like Left Behind, a bit upset. "To say anything negative about Stephen Hawking is like bullying a blind man," he told E! Online. "He has an unfair disadvantage, and that gives him a free pass on some of his absurd ideas. Professor Hawking is heralded as 'the genius of Britain,' yet he believes in the scientific impossibility that nothing created everything and that life sprang from non-life. Why should anyone believe Mr. Hawking's writings if he cannot provide evidence for his unscientific belief that out of nothing, everything came?
Stephen Hawking didn't respond, likely because he was busy adding Growing Pains to his Netflix queue in preparation for Armageddon.
