The next season of Mad Men won't air until 2012, but that doesn't mean you can't get excited about its future appearance. For starters, it looks like someone very familiar to Mad Men viewers will be directing the season five premiere: Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm.

“The wheels have officially been set in motion to make that happen,” Hamm told TVLine. “It’s a very exciting challenge that I’m looking forward to with a mixture of utter fear and excitement.”

Hamm will be the second Mad Men cast member to direct an episode; John Slattery, who plays Roger Sterling, helmed two episodes last season.

“I watched Slattery do it, and he handled it with such grace and ability and ease,” Hamm said. “I figured if he can do it, shit, I can do it too.”

Indeed. This is the first we're hearing of Hamm having an interest in directing, though it should be noted that his long-time partner, actress/writer Jennifer Westfeldt is directing Hamm in Friends with Kids, due out later this year. Perhaps he caught the bug from her.
