HBO has jumped into the critically acclaimed movie game with both feet—witness the Barry Levinson-directed You Don't Know Jack which starred Al Pacino last year— and it seems they like the water just fine. In addition to the 2008 financial crisis film Too Big to Fail (debuting tonight), and a planned Bernie Madoff movie with Robert De Niro set to star, HBO will produce a new film about Phil Spector.

Al Pacino has been previously lined up as Spector, and now some more casting and development news has leaked out. Bette Midler will co-star opposite the Oscar-winning actor as his defense attorney, while Jeffrey Tambor (no touching!) will play Bruce Cutler, another member of the Spector defense team.

David Mamet will write and direct, with Levinson producing. Look for the untitled film to hit the pay cable network sometime next year.
