In the immediate aftermath of the 8.9 earthquake and tsunami that struck northern Japan last month, some pretty graphic and harrowing videos emerged. But perhaps nothing we've seen of the disaster can stand next to the sweeping devastation captured in this five minute video that recently surfaced online.
Shot from the high ground overlooking a town just below, the footage builds in tension up until about the 1:50 mark, when entire buildings can be seen sliding across the landscape like checkers on a checker board. By the 4:00 mark, townspeople can be seen running up the hill for their lives, some struggling to carry a few small possessions.
It's unclear who makes it out. The helpless wails of the filmmakers soundtrack the unreal turn of events. Watch above.
