Tim Hetherington, the Oscar-nominated co-director of the 2010 documentary Restrepo, was killed by "mortar fire" in Misrata today while covering the violence between Muammar Gaddafi's regime and Libyan rebels. Another photographer, Chris Hondros, was also reportedly killed.
While the exact circumstances of the attack are still unclear, it is known that Hetherington sent out a tweet yesterday that read: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."
Hetherington was apparently working for the Panos photo agency at the time of his death.
While Hetherington may be best known for co-directing Restrepo, which documented an American platoon in Afghanistan over the course of a year, he was also a cinematographer on other political documentaries such as Liberia: An Uncivil War and The Devil Came On Horseback.
