Jail Guard Busted For Agreeing To Trade Drugs For Dealer's Release

What does freedom cost at Rikers Island? Three kilos.

A correction officer at New York's Rikers Island may join his charges behind bars after he was busted promising to help spring an imprisoned drug dealer in exchange for three kilograms of cocaine.

Cops busted Robert Whitfield, the 48-year-old CO, with help from the inmate he had promised to spring. Waiting to be sentenced on drug charges, the unnamed inmate had every reason to turn Whitfield in and no reason to trust him. As the New York Daily News points out, "It was unclear Wednesday night if Whitfield could have made good on his promise to arrange an early release for a prisoner on his own."

However, the inmate will likely get a break in sentencing after helping to bust an allegedly crooked guard. Cops picked up Whitfield and an accomplice who was allegedly on the way to a meeting point in Manhattan to pick up the drugs. Whitfield is now in protective custody, his bail set at $50,000. That's enough, we hear, to buy a couple of kilos outright.
