Looks like Ice Cube is taking his hood-centric drama Chrome And Paint to the good folks at Disney.
The film, which chronicles the custom car culture of South Central, Los Angeles, will put audiences into the seats of tricked-out Mercedes, BMWs, and lowrider cars. Considering that the rapper-actor has mixed up his grittier film roles with kiddie projects like Are We There Yet? and The Longshots, we can't be surprised at his decision to partner up with the house of Mickey & Minnie.
Cube, who directed the 2010 Okaland Raiders documentary Straight Outta L.A. for ESPN, hasn't directed a narrative feature since 1998's strip-club favorite The Player's Club, which he also starred in and wrote. Eva Vives (Raising Victor Vargas) will re-write the Chrome And Paint script to lighten the R-rated project's tone in order to satisfy a PG-13 audience and fall in line with Disney's tentpole-and-toy-sales-friendly motto. Does this mean Hot Wheels and Matchbox will get some of that N.W.A. flavor? That remains to be seen, but if so, you can imagine that everyone involved will be happy.
Maybe Cube saw Mickey's breakdancing skills and thought the mouse's company was the right home for the street-oriented property.
The plan is to shoot Chrome And Paint by the end of summer. Meanwhile, Cube will star in 21 Jump Street with Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and the recently announced Dave Franco (younger brother of James Franco).
