Ask Jim Shepard and he'll happily tell you that he can't help but write about failed expeditions; failure is one of his principal themes. Whether it's Poles failing to climb a mountain or Nazis helplessly lost in Tibet, this brilliant writer sees nothing but fodder for short fiction. This Monday he gets the opportunity to wax poetic about one of his favorite films, Herzog's Aguirre, The Wrath of God.
Aguirre could easily be a Shepard story; it's the tale of a group of conquistadors who become lost—and less than sane—in their pursuit of El Dorado. It shouldn't come as a spoiler when we tell you they don't make it. The art, though, is in the downward spiral.
At the Crosby Street Hotel, indie bookseller McNally Jackson hosts a screening of Aguirre followed by comments from Shepard. This is a rare opportunity to catch a thoughtful pairing of two great artists and two great mediums.
