Complex Says:
On paper,
Boomerang seems like another blah-blah romantic comedy: Eddie Murphy plays a corporate swinger whose new boss (Robin Givens) plays him the same way he plays women. It's a good thing, then, that director Reginald Hudlin and his screenwriters focused on the "com" half of rom-com, surrounding a toned-down Murphy with a colorful array of jokesters. The movie belongs to the amazing John Witherspoon, though, who chips in a few brief yet dynamite bits.
Boomerang is proof that, when handled properly, romantic comedies don't have to suck. Here's a thought: Put John Witherspoon in Jennifer Aniston's next movie. Problem solved.
Fun Fact:
Boomerang was the beginning of a productive working relationship between Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell; later, in '92, they reteamed for the hit TV show
Martin.
