The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize nominees have been announced and it looks like the Swedish organization has lost its mind.
This year, the Nobel Foundation has nominated 241 people and organizations—the most in the awards history. Nominees include Afghan rights advocate Sima Samar, Cuban Dissident Oswaldo Paya Sardinas, and the Internet. Yup, the entire Internet is up for a Nobel Peace Prize. Who would even accept the award if the 'Net was to win? Al Gore? Mark Zuckerberg?
Also nominated for the award is the infamous WikiLeaks site. Fresh off the news that he's being extradited back to Nobel's homeland of Sweden to face sexual assault charges, Julian Assange can take some solace in knowing that the country that may potentially send him to prison, may also bestow on to him one of the world's most prestigious awards as well as its $1.58 million prize. That could pay a lot of legal bills. Just sayin'.
