Following up on our preview of an extreme South Korean slasher film last week, we now turn our sights north to Boston, where the Coolidge Theatre will be screening Maniac, a highly dated but nevertheless highly unsettling grindhouse film from 1980. Set in a much dirtier New York City, William Lustig’s story follows a traumatized man through his uncontrollable, murderous compulsions. Now considered a classic of the genre, the film hit the American public so hard that Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert tried to get people to boycott it. The special effects (meaning copious amounts of blood) were handled by Tom Savini, the guru of gore for Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 just to name a few. If you like your pulp with highly saturated colors and highly upsetting scenes of men wearing wigs, this is for you.-Finn Cohen
