Perhaps the most iconic New York film ever, Taxi Driver, released in 1976, captures the city swirling about the drain, ready to disappear into the sewer. The story of Travis Bickle (played brilliantly by a young Robert De Niro) and his descent into madness amidst a city eating its denizens alive still resonates, both as a a sublime historical artifact and as a technical masterpiece.
Seeing it for the first time on the big screen with a new, cleaned up print would be perfect. But even if you've memorized the dialogue, can act out entire scenes, the film still demands another viewing, if only for the crispness of this anniversary print.
