VOTE: Should Tyler Perry Play Alex Cross?

The cross-dressing star has been cast as detective Alex Cross. You decide if he's right for the part.

Tyler Perry is playing who, you ask? The 41-year-old multi-hyphenate entertainer has taken over the role of Detective Alex Cross. Originally James Patterson's thriller novels turned big budget films starred Morgan Freeman (Kiss the Girls, Along Came a Spider) and, most recently, Idris Elba as the homicide investigator. But today Empire is reporting that the man "better known for appearing as loudmouth lady Madea" has replaced Elba; making the switch from comedy to action-drama to play one of MPD's finest.

Rob Cohen and David Twohy have also played a game of musical chairs. Twohy, who had been attached to re-write and direct the film, has opted out with Cohen jumping aboard to take his place. The new outing is currently billed as I, Alex Cross, and no word has been released on whether it'll follow the continued story of the conflicted lawman who gets drawn back into criminal cases. QED International is currently seeking a distributor to partner up with. Maybe Perry can convince Lionsgate to join in, given the success of the Madea films?

Cohen is looking at June to begin shooting.
