As the smartphone wars heat up, a new study by Nielsen may help companies figure out which groups their marketing dollars need to be directed towards.
Nielsen, the good folks behind SoundScan, released data showing a breakdown of smartphone purchases by race. According to Nielsen's chart (above) Asians (Pacific Islanders included) love Apple's iPhone, while African-Americans favor RIM's BlackBerry brand. Based on the study, no platform dominates the purchases of Whites and Hispanics.
Also interesting was what percentage of each race were smartphone users. The study showed that, generally, Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans buy smartphones at a higher rate than Whites—27 percent of Whites own a smartphone, while 45 percent of Asians and Hispanics do.
