Detroit’s Black Milk emerged with his MPC several years ago ready to fill the void left in the Motor City after the untimely death of J Dilla. Since then, he has expanded his palette from straightforward loops and claps to live instrumentation, with a heavy tour schedule to boot. Employing drummer Dara Jones and keyboardist BA, his 2010 release Album of the Year unfolds with a wide range of styles, from overdriven live drum breaks to frenetic sample patterns and spacey synth lines. A world apart from his early productions, the new incarnation of Black Milk is like a power trio more akin to The Roots than to Slum Village.
